Privy enables your users to log in to their account via SMS or WhatsApp. Your account can be set up for either SMS or WhatsApp, but not both at the same time. Your chosen configuration will apply to all applications under your Privy account.
Privy recommends including alternative login options alongside SMS or enabling Multi-Factor Authentication to ensure broad accessibility in regions without SMS coverage and to allow users to access their accounts in the event that they lose SMS access.
Included on all plans.
This enables SMS log in for only US and Canada.
Privy supports international SMS login in two ways: out-of-the-box coverage for a default set of regions, or bring-your-own (BYO) Twilio for full control over regions and configuration. BYO Twilio is recommended for the broadest coverage and configurability.
BYO Twilio is available for accounts on Scale and Enterprise plans. Reach out to [email protected] to request access.
With a dedicated Twilio account, your app can configure geo-permissions for specific regions, implement custom fraud detection rules, set spending limits, and access comprehensive logging through Twilio’s dashboard. BYO Twilio also unlocks international regions beyond Privy’s default coverage.
  1. Sign up for a Twilio account if one does not already exist. Ensure that the Twilio account is a paid account, fully onboarded, and fully verified.
  2. In the Twilio Console, configure a Verify service and region coverage.
  3. Reach out to Privy at [email protected] and provide the following Twilio credentials:
  • Privy app ID
  • Twilio Account SID
  • Twilio Auth token
  • Twilio Verify service SID
Share these credentials securely through a secrets manager such as Doppler or 1Password, not in plaintext email.

Out-of-the-box coverage

Out-of-the-box international SMS is available only for accounts on Enterprise plans. Reach out to [email protected] to request access.
Privy uses Twilio to deliver international SMS, and underlying carrier costs are passed through to your account. Refer to Twilio’s pricing here.
